My Search

I began my research directly with counselors. I needed to understand the role a counselor played in the life of a student, how involved a counselor typically is, and techniques that work best in order to get a student to open up. Questioning my mentor directly served to get the information I needed with a twist of actual experience in dealing with children. I needed in depth answers, so the interview I conduct allowed me to get legitimate information. As inferred by my mentor, it is hard for students to come to counseling to receive help, because they do not want to receive embarrassment or ridicule from their peers. I needed more information, so I interviewed each counselor. They began to discuss how there wasn’t enough of them for the entire student body. The counselor to student ratio is too large for effective counseling for any student who needs it.

While my mentorship did provide me with good roots into the topic, I reached out to the internet to acquire more knowledge on the best approach for counselors, and how they should be involved while not over reaching they power. A source explained how there are techniques, such as counseling academically and socially, that prove to be the best methods in helping but not taking over. Reviewing the information I gathered revealed to me that I only addressed how the counselor alone could the the student, showing bias that they were the only influence.

This is when I decided I need to address the parental side of helping a trouble child. In articles I found they discussed how it is actually proven that a good counselor to parent relationship can improve a child’s willingness to discuss problems and ability to deal with issues. When bot the counselor and the parent work together, conflict is eliminated, and the child receives help from home and school. My essential question ponders on how you can positively effect student struggling emotionally. I learned that to truly improve students emotional state, you have to address all asset of their life and present a positive influence that suits each situation.
